Sports Teams Reach Out During Crisis

Not surprisingly during this time of crisis, Denver sports teams have stepped up to help out.

With the baseball season on hold, the Colorado Rockies, the Rockies Foundation and AT&T SportsNet put together the Stay At Home Opener on April 3, a broadcast that featured the best half-innings from Rockies home openers over the years.

The telecast was a way to raise funds for the Food Bank of the Rockies, which works directly with food banks in Colorado and Wyoming. The event raised over $500,000 that will be used to help people during this uncertain time.

On Easter Sunday, Rockies Vice President of Community Relations Jim Kellogg spoke with KOA NewsRadio about that event. He also talked about the organization's efforts to aid the Denver Rescue mission and players helping out their communities. That interview is below.

In addition, Rockies players such as Raimel Tapia and Daniel Murphy have been among those helping out.

As the crisis was unfolding in Colorado, the Denver Broncos gave $500,000 to Help Colorado Now, the state's COVID-19 relief fund, and Broncos President of Football Operations/GM John Elway gave an additional $50,000.

Early in the crisis, the Broncos partnered with a pair of state legislators, Project C.U.R.E and Colorado Concern and hosted a drive to collect valuable personal protection equipment (PPE) for area hospitals and healthcare professionals.

The team also launched an auction that seeks to raise needed resources for the fund and individual players are taking the initiative to assist on their own.

Kroenke Sports Properties, the Colorado Avalanche and Denver Nuggets have also reached out to lending assistance, working with Kroenke Sports Charities and their partners such as Mile High United Way, the Denver Rescue Mission, the Food Bank of the Rockies, Volunteers of America, Make-A-Wish Colorado, Denver Math Hoops and more.

Check out Jim Kellogg of the Rockies on KOA NewsRadio on Sunday, April 12.
